In-person classes in Grayslake, il

10:00am Castanets Mini-Class (20 minutes)
Appropriate for beginners through intermediate level, we will work on basic technique, beginning and intermediate drills, and traditional and modern movement patterns. Castanets can be purchased in class—email me if you are dropping in and need to buy a pair so they can be prepared ahead for you.

10:30am Mantón Mini-Class (20 minutes)
Appropriate for beginners through intermediate level, we will focus on a new mantón technique each week, as well as learn a short movement sequence incorporating that technique. You can use one that is provided during the class for free (very basic quality mantón—also sold on Amazon when you search manton de manila).

To use a professional quality mantón for this class, you can purchase one online from Flamenco West or Amapolas Moras (in Argentina—be sure to purchase one with the long fringe! Some models have short fringe.) Amapolas Moras has an Etsy shop as well to make purchasing easier, this one is perfect for practicing and beginning performing. You can also order online from the main store in Sevilla, Spain, that carries high quality mantónes, Juan Faronda. Only look at 140cm x 140cm shawls. Weight should be 400-500 grams minimum—800 grams is professional quality. They told me they will ship to the US. Flamenco students get a 5% discount—reach out to them via Whatsap +34-606-263-067 to help you get the one you want—they will send you photos and prices directly.

You can also rent one of my professional mantónes for use in class; contact me directly to arrange this:

  • $3 per class

  • $10 for a full 4 week session

  • $15 for a full 6 week session.

11:00am Multi-Level Flamenco Technique & Choreography Class (1 hour) Appropriate for beginners and advanced beginners, we will work on flamenco posture & attitude, braceo (armwork), floreo (handwork), and taconeo (footwork).

For the Summer Session, we will work on choreographic variations on a theme each week, covering percussion remates with hands and feet, tangos marking, Alegrias escobilla, and Alegrias marking. We will learn several variations, then you will create your own.

For the Fall 1 Session, we will be doing a tour of palos. Each week we will focus on the music, attitude/aire, and movement types of six different palos (or styles/’branches’ of flamenco): Soleá, Caracoles, Tangos, Tientos, Guajiras, Caña. We will learn a movement combination from each style, each week.

For the Fall 2 Session, we will will focus on Caña, building out a choreography over the 6 weeks, covering the entrance/llamada, letra, llamada, escobilla/subida/llamada (2 weeks), buleria.
